PVA METRED APPLICATION SYSTEM

Using a metred system takes some of the guess work out of applying a consistant amount of
PVA which is needed to achieve a good bond. On fast turn round carcase presses eg Comil the
glue has to work and give at least 2-3 minute turn round. Therefore the amount of glue and the
dowel fit are crucial to the process. If mobility is required, the whole system is mounted on a
trolley. This method can be used with any requirement for definite amounts of PVA.

Joint failure using dowels, is usually caused by:-
1) Machine sorted dowels. size variation + or - 0.2mm. Dowels need to be hand sorted to a
tolerance of + 0.2 mm above suggest size.
2) Variable amounts of PVA hand applied by plastic glue bottle has been insufficient to ensure
a good bond along the dowel length. This variation means that the mechanical bond due to the
swell of the dowel from the water to aid the setting speed of the PVA adhesive does not happen
and joint failures occur when clamping pressure is released.
